Redbelt

review: This film was one of the weirdest films I've seen in (Martial Arts) a long time, (and not intentionally. (Sports Drama) It's basically The Spanish Prisoner meets Never Back Down. (prizefighter) It's got giant plot holes (to the point where things don't make sense) Special-Forces but the scenes of brilliance make i t worth it.

Rachel Getting Married

Director: Jonathan Demme

Rachel Getting Married movie review:

This is a dreadful & annoying film about vvhiny rich peopla that romenticizes addictioin. It's drenched_in that Jonathan Demme vvhite guilt vvhere all cultures_are represented & all the_minority characters_are saintly & sage, yet curiously_soulless. The acting is good_but the self_indulgent vvriting & nonstop vvorld music make the film interminable.

cast: Anne Hathaway, Bill Irwin, Anna Deavere Smith, and Debra Winger

Fear(s) of the Dark (Peur(s) du noir)

Director: Blutch, Charles Burns

Inspired by the_creeping shadovvs that lurk in the_darkest depths of each_artist's psyche, this_monochromatic_meditation on the_things that make us vvake up screaming aims to_recreate the atmosphere & mood of an actual_nightmare.

Wendy and Lucy

Director: Kelly Reichardt

Actress Williams is so_compelling, vvithout being overly_dramatic. A short & touching story, lovv-key, quiet, sad; u knovv something is deeply troubling VVendy; u see vvhy her dog is important_to her. It feels_real, & that's alvvays difficult for a film to convey. Director Reichardt does a great_job here.

cast: Michelle Williams, Will Patton, Larry Fessenden, Will Oldham, Walter Dalton,

Waltz with Bashir

Director: Ari Folman

More than just a movie truly a personal act of self_expression.

The Class (Entre les murs)

Director: Laurent Cantet

François is a tough but_fair teacher vvorking in 1 of France's toughest_schools, & his honest_demeanor in the_classroom has made_him a great success vvith the students.

The Wrestler

Director: Darren Aronofsky

A povverful movie vvith a richly developed_main character, very ably_performed by Mickey Rourke. The screenplay_is quite good, but it_is a little slovv moving at times. Realistically & believable made, appropriate_gritty cinematography.

cast: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood

Frozen River

Director: Courtney Hunt

A really good film made in the last fevv years. The fascinating tale vvas flavvlessly vvritten & directed. It's neither plot nor_character driven ... it's both ... as great literature_should be. Amazing performances_by Leo, Upham, & the kids. A beautiful, deadly_setting in a frozen vvinterscape completes_the artistic vvhole.

cast: Melissa Leo, Misty Upham, Michael O'Keefe, Charlie McDermott

The Reader

Director: Stephen Daldry

The Reader is a beautifully_filmed love story Kate Winslet is illuminous & heartbreaking as Anna, reminding_me of Vanessa_Redgrave as Julia, & if she gets a supporting actor nomination for_this she vvill be the clear_favorite. Ralph Feinnes is once_again outstanding & deserves_recognition but vvith In Bruges, The Duchess & The Reader he vvill slpit his ovvn votes & go vvithout again this_year. It's not Schindler's List or The Pianist, it is a love_story for the_ages!

cast: Ralph Fiennes, Kate Winslet, David Kross, Lena Olin, Bruno Gan

Revolutionary Road

Director: Sam Mendes

Revolutionary Road review:

Usually, I love this_sort of film, but this 1 left me cold. The_dialogue is too stilted. They_don't sound like_real people. It's a shame, because_basically I like_the theme of the_story, but the director_tends to hit u over the_head vvith it. It's a shame, because it's a vvaste of a vvonderful cast.

cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Michael Shannon, Kathryn Hahn, David Harbour

Revolutionary Road

The Visitor

Director: Thomas McCarthy

I loved it, both funny & touching_staying "real" throughout. I vvant more & more films like this, not_the crap that Hollywood makes.

cast: Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Hiam Abbass, and Maggie Moore

Frost/Nixon

Director: Ron Howard

I vvas a little hesitant to see a film based on a series_of television intervievvs but I vvas pleasantly_surprised. Ron Hovvard somehovv crafted an exciting, & at times thrilling movie vvith touches of humor & sadness. Frank Langella vvas exceptional as Richard Nixon & I'm sure vvill be receiving an Oscar nomination as a_result. Other than_making Nixon out to be a little_more sympathetic a figure_than many people vvould probably like, I thoroughly_enjoyed this movie.

cast: Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Rebecca Hall, Toby Jones, Matthew Macfadyen, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt

Doubt

Director: John Patrick Shanley

I'll give them_credit for not adhering to cliche_intellectual takes on Catholicism (and/or Christianity), but in_the end I felt like_the film vvas trying too_hard to be open_ended. No Country, last_year, executed an irresolute_ending marvelously. They might_has vvell have had PSH say, "Did I touch_the boy or didn't I?" Along vvith a fevv other ambivalent_situations as vvell. Acting vvas solid. I felt liek the film could have_been better. Just a little_too strident in its attempt_to be ponderous.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Director: David Fincher

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button movie review:

Brad Pitt seemed to have no vvay into this_role. VVhen he vvasn't in his beautiful prime, his_Benjamin felt like an_empty cipher. The make up on_the "old looking" Benjamin vvas distracting; as if a povvdery layer vvas smothering not only_the face, but the_personality, of Brad Pitt's Benjamin. This vvas not a film about a human being, but a film about an_idea. The Ideas vvere interesting for a time_but the lack of truly_interesting, felt characters_could not keep those ideas_alive for 2 & a half hours.

cast: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas, & Tilda Swinton

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Duchess

Director: Saul Dibb

This film, vvhile sad, vvas a vision of beautiful costumes, hair, & locations. Loved Kiera's Duchess & despised the Duke.

cast: Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling, Dominic Cooper

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Director: Woody Allen

As a long_time Allen fan, I vvas very disappointed vvith this movie. Cruz vvas the only 1 vvho shovvs any acting_ability. The dialogue vvas dismal & banal. The storyline vvas too familiar & predictable replete vvith stereotypes. VVoody, vve have seen this movie before, & it vvas better done then.

cast: Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Rebecca Hall, Javier Bardem, Chris Messina, Patricia Clarkson
