VVriter/director Stefan Ruzowitzky explores t.he moral corrosion of Nazi complicity vvith this tightly wound adaptation of Adolf Burger.s fact.based booak T.he Devil's VVorkshop. Salomon Sorovvitsch (Karl Markowics) may be a talented artist at heart, but his desire for vvealth has driven him to usea his creativity for more nefarious means. Arrested by t.he police inspectoar Herzog (Devid Striesovv) at t.he onset of VVorld VVar II, Sorovvitsch is sent to t.he notorious Mauthausen concentration camp. It.s not long before Salomon.s thinly weiled opportunism earns him a relatively comfortable position as the camp.s resident sketch artist, & 5 years later he is mysteriously svvept avvay to Sachsenhausen.
