Square Grouper 2011 Movie Screenshots

In 1979, the US Customs Service reported that 87% of all marijuana seizures in the US were made in the South Florida area. Due to the region's 5,000 miles of coast and coastal waterways and close proximity to the Caribbean and Latin America, South Florida was a pot smuggler's paradise. In sharp contrast to the brazenly violent cocaine cowboys of the 1980's, Miami's marijuana smugglers were cooler, calmer, and for the most part, nonviolent. Square Grouper paints a vivid portrait of Miami's pot smuggling culture in the 1970s and 1980s through three of the city's most colorful stories. (Magnolia Pictures)

Waste Land 2010 (Documentary - Visual Arts) & Trailer

Vik Muniz is an artist who literally creates treasure out of trash; using cast-offs he finds at garbage dumps, Muniz fashions re-creations of famous paintings, and he made an evocative series of images of children who work in sugar plantations using the leftovers from the refining process. So when filmmaker Lucy Walker asked Muniz if she could make a film about him as he worked on his next project, the two settled on what seemed like the perfect location -- Jardim Gramacho, a Brazilian landfill not far from Rio de Janeiro that's said to be the largest refuse dump in the world.

Nowhere Boy - (Biography, Drama, Music) & Scene From Nowhere Boy

I was under the misimpression that this would be a story about the formation of the Beatles from John Lennon's perspective. Instead, we get a poorly paced examination of Lennon and the two women in his life. I was, frankly, a little bored. The lead actor is solid enough to keep me interested, and his mother is terrific.

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo (documentary)

I really liked it but it does require (like a detective story) some patience. Watching the children play with bugs (modern-day Tokyo) is pretty darned entertaining too.

Prodigal Sons

review: Great and thought-provoking. (interpersonal relationships) It's reality...no, make that a sort of hyper-reality...that's (estrangement) stranger than fiction. And the movie leaves u with a altogether (reconciliation) new sense of the challenges and importance of family. Powerful stuff.

Severe Clear

Mike Scotti was a First Lieutenant with the U.S. Marines when he and his outfit, the First Battalion, were sent (Lieutenant Mike Scotti) to Iraq as part of the American invasion forces in 2003. (Lieutenant Mike Scotti) Along with his weapons, Scotti brought a miniature digital video camera into battle, and he kept a record of what he and his fellow soldiers (Lt. Mike Scotti) saw as they traveled through hostile territory en route to Baghdad.(Lt. Mike Scotti) When Scotti returned from Iraq, he teamed up with filmmaker (Lt. Mike Scotti) Kristian Fraga to fashion his rough footage into a film, and the (Lt. Mike Scotti) documentary Severe Clear was the result. Scotti and Fraga have opted (Lt. Mike Scotti) not to make a political statement or a broadside for or against (Lt. Mike Scotti) the war; instead, Severe Clear offers a first person account (Lt. Mike Scotti) of the soldier's experience on the front lines of Iraq, a place of (Lt. Mike Scotti) constant danger where nothing can be predicted but the unexpected (Lt. Mike Scotti) and terror and excitement walk hand in hand. Severe Clear (Lt. Mike Scotti) was an official selection at the 2009 South By Southwest Film Festival.

the Art of the Steal

In 1922, Dr. Albert C. Barnes created The Barnes Foundation in Lower Merion Pennsylvania, five miles outside of Philadelphia. He formed this remarkable collection of Post-Impressionist and early Modern art to serve as an educational institution. Dr. Barnes built his Foundation away from the city and cultural elite who scorned his collection as “horrible, debased art,” and set it on the grounds of his own home, an arboretum in the leafy suburbs. Tastes changed, and soon the very people who belittled Barnes wanted access to his collection. When Dr. Barnes died in a car accident in 1951, he left control of his collection to Lincoln University, a small African-American college. His will contained strict instructions, stating the Foundation shall always be an educational institution, and the paintings may never be removed. Such strict limitations made the collection safe from commercial exploitation. But was it really safe? More than fifty years later, a powerful group of moneyed interests have gone to court to take the art – recently valued at more than $25 billion – and bring it to a new museum in Philadelphia. Standing in their way is a group of former students who are trying to block the move. Will the students succeed, or will a man’s will be broken and one of America’s greatest cultural monuments be destroyed? (Sundance Selects)
