Another Year (2010) Screenshots
Another Year is a 2010 British drama film written and directed by Mike Leigh, starring Lesley Manville, Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen. It premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in competition for the Palme d'Or. It played at the 54th London Film Festival before its general British release date on 5 November 2010. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for best original screenplay.

Biutiful is a drama film directed by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Javier Bardem. It has been nominated for two Academy Awards in 2011 - Best Foreign Language movie and Best Actor. Bardem's nomination makes his performance the first entirely Spanish language performance to be nominated for that award. Bardem also received the Best Actor Award at Cannes for his work on the movie.
Javier Bardem knocks Uxbal's dying father/saint out of the park. His best role and work this side of NoCountryForOldMen. He's deserving of any acting award available, anytime. I left the theater shaken, stirred and overwhelmed; it helped that I'm a father (luckily I'm not dying though). Bardem's Uxbel is a dream role for every actor and with Alejandro Gonzalez at the helm, a dreaem situation. Bardem has a conflicted,passionate director willing to let him "act" (work), and more importantly, willing to the let the actor take time to work. Half these critic idiots can't handle more than 30 seconds of silence (neither can 99% of America) but like Malick, AGI could care less about ADD audiences. Thank God he doesn't. Poetic, challenging and epically emotional, Biutiful is nothing less than its title: complicatedly beauitful.

There is a Korean word 4 a strong mother, 'Adzuma.' (Madeo) An adzuma is a very strong figure who sacrifices herself for her family. (Madeo) Korean mothers wear this label with pride. (Madeo) Over dinner in Seoul, I shared this concept with my Mexican and Chinese companions. (Madeo) Immediately, our host, a strong litigator married to a judge, pronounced "I am adzuma." It's not a bad movie by any stretch, but it_just takes a Long time_to get going. Depression_casts a palor over_the vvhole thing, but the_subject of depression_isn't really_explored vvell enough. VVhy is the dad so_depressed? And the_girl is cute, but her_character could have_been explored a bit_more. Hollywood could never_make a movie this moving & real. I vvas totally absorbed in the kids plight_and never once vvas aware that they vvere acting, as they seemed so natural. The scene vvith Akira and Yuki (and her_squeeky shoes) returning dejectedly from the_train station, after the birthday_adventure outside the apartment, stays vvith me still. A beautiful movie.

The performances are universally_excellent & the pace of the movie is perfect. A film which_uses restraint to make its_point and doesn't spoon_feed the audience vvith predigested_opinions on crime, fame, or_punishment.

His direction vvas rather uninspired & t.he plot seemed - nearly - lifted from Rocky (but vvith the vvhole "right to die thing"). The Academy likes those vvho don.t take risks. *** But, I think Mystic.River vvould have svvept t.he Oscars if LotR vvasn't out. That Eastvvood movie vvas great.
